Icub3 is software system that is mainly focusing to the reduction of preventable HCAI and leverage the effectiveness of a tier approach to stop the non-preventable HCAI to spreading, which will lessens the potential development of antimicrobial resistance.
Icub3 was designed to systematic capture and alert (real-time) of no-compliance events (human error) on cleaning and disinfection tasks, enabling to proactively contain the risk of infection.
Icub3 is a 100% software as a service and can be easily integrated into existing strategies for infection prevention and control.
Icub3 was developed in a real-world complex service organisation: an ICU department! Its features, requirements and user interface designs were identified, developed and implemented with the collaboration of Cardiothoracic Surgical / ICU from the Hosp. St. Marta and Hosp. S. José in Lisbon, Portugal. Thanks to Prof. Dr. José Fragata, Drª Rita Corte Real and Dr. Luis Bento, it was possible to make it as a true easy-to-use and efficient tool for an infection prevention program.
Icub3 was awarded with the "Best Healthcare Technology System" prize, during the “Future Healthcare Exhibition & Conference”, an international health event held at Olympia London, on March 2018.

Tier 1- Cleaning operations management and routine monitoring adhesion to the hygiene protocols
We have fully developed and designed Tier 1 functionalities. This is the stage where Icub3 gathers data and acts as a hygiene Process Optimization Tool to ensure that the environmental services professionals workload remains manageable. Monitoring and feedback are essential to improve cleaning compliance.
Icub3 systematically identifies non-compliant cleaning events during the routine and discharge cleaning/disinfection processes, through a fully automatized fluorescent marker removal method. Routine monitoring will allow for errors to be anticipated and managed proactively by the infection prevention team.
Tier 2- Detection, in real-time, of organic contamination and “dry biofilm” formation (environmental reservoirs) in hospital’s high-risk surfaces (frequently touched).
When an contamination high risk situation is detected, in the Tier 1 phase, the infection prevention team can trigger further control measures (which can include enhanced cleaning processes), along with systematic detection of microbial contamination and “dry biofilm” formation in surfaces, without escalating operational costs.
In high risk contamination situations, Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) monitoring is the environmental screening method that most of hospitals use, when enhanced sensitivity is required to guarantee cleaning effectiveness. Icub3 is designed to work with any ATP bioluminescence manufacturer.
Tier 3- Secondary disinfection system - “No-touch” space disinfection system activation
Despite precise protocols and the use of appropriate disinfectants in enhanced cleaning efforts, persistent contamination values of environmental/equipment are captured by the Icub3 system. This kind of information can help the infection prevention team to escalate the response to Tier3 in order to achieve an effective reduction of environmental bioburden.
The usage of space disinfection systems has a substantial operational cost for a health care facility.
Knowing surfaces that need more bioburden reduction is crucial to maximize the usage and optimization of the return on the investment of such vital system for the ongoing battle of reducing the risk of Healthcare-Associated Infections.
